History

The Bridgeton Relays "New Jersey's Oldest Relay" had its first running on Saturday, April 22, 1944. On that day, the relays included four events: half mile relay, mile relay, two mile relay, and the Bridgeton medley (880,440,220, Mile). The Relays attracted teams from Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and some as far as Washington D.C.

The relay record holders were calculated in yards through 1987. Those events were: 480 yard shuttle hurdles, 440 yard relay, 880 yard relay, mile relay, Bridgeton medley, and the two mile relay.

Field events were introduced to the relays in 1985 and in 1988 all the running events were calculated in comlpete metric distances.

Legendary greats, Wilt Chamberlain of Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, Carl Lewis of John F. Kennedy High School in Willingboro, and Dennis Mitchell from Edgewood High School in Voorhees, all competed in the Bridgeton Relays during their high school careers.
